A PRESENTATION
ceremony commemorating a swimming club stalwart features in Looking Back this week.
Pictured at the top of the page, Leslie Dean, who was chairman of Accrington Swimming Club, received recognition of his 50 years membership after the ladies 200 yard medley championship at Accrington Swimming Baths in 1976.
Karen Brown, 11, of Accrington High School won the championship and it marked the close of the season.
After the race, Councillor C Dillon assembled spectators for the presentation to Mr Dean, who was headmaster at Hyndburn Park Primary School, and who joined the club at the age of ten.
Pictured below that on the right is the Group Committee of All Saints Scouts Headquarters in Clayton-le-Moors who organised a dance at the local Conservative Club.
They include Mrs H Tyldesley, Mr P Tyldesley, Miss J Arkwright and Mr S A Frisby.
Below that (right) the maintenance department team of Platt International received their awards for winning the interdepartmental cricket knockout.
In the final they beat Autos, who won the competition the previous year.
The cup and individual trophies were presented by Mr S Prince, president of Platt’s Social Club, and the picture shows Mr M Roberts receiving the cricket cup from Mr Prince.
A scheme to buy the patients of the geriatric unit at Queen’s Park Hospital, Blackburn, a colour television resulted in 20 nurses from Accrington and surrounding areas completing a 20-mile sponsored walk.
Accrington nurses Anne Knight, Marie Kelly and Eileen Walton organised the event from the hospital to Haslingden and back.
The walkers, aged between 25 and 50, raised a total of £300 and were sponsored by colleagues, family and friends.
The picture (bottom right) shows Sister M Kelly, Sister A Knight, Sister Reynolds, Sister S Parker, Sister I Hemons, Sister N Barr and Sister M Weller.
Our final photo this week, on the bottom left, was taken when a cheque for £450 was handed over to Mr J Baldwin, Inskip League chairman, by Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club president Lincoln Haworth.
The money was raised for the cost of the League’s new £2,700 mini coach and also present were Mrs T Dawson and Mrs L Slinger, of the Accrington Ladies Circle, who had recently handed over a £250 cheque to the League.
