AMURDER investigation has been launched and a grieving family has paid tribute after a man was discovered dead in Accrington.

Police were called shortly before 1pm on Sunday, January 19 to a report that a man had been stabbed at an address on Edleston Street.

Officers and paramedics attended but despite their efforts the man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Mark Fisher, 33, who lived there. His family are being supported by specially trained officers.

Mr Fisher suffered a number of stab wounds and a Home Office postmortem examination has revealed the cause of death as multiple stab wounds.

Two people initially arrested on suspicion of Mr Fisher’s murder have now been released from custody. A 37-year old man from Accrington has been released without charge and a 35-year-old woman, also from Accrington, has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

A 33-year-old woman from Accrington and 45-year-old man from Accrington were arrested on Monday night on suspicion of murder. They are currently in custody.

Detectives are continuing to probe the circumstances of Mr Fisher’s death and are carrying out CCTV enquiries, house to house enquiries and other lines of investigation.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who may have information to get in touch.

Detective Chief Inspector Jill Johnston, of the Force Major Investigation Team, is leading the inquiry.

She said: “Our thoughts very much remain with Mr Fisher’s family and friends at what is an extremely traumatic time. I have a team of detectives and staff working on this investigation and I would like to stress that we are continuing to work around the clock to establish exactly what happened. While we have made a number of arrests, our enquiries are ongoing.

“I would appeal for anyone who has any information which could assist us to come forward if they haven’t already. Even if you think the information you have is insignificant please get in touch and let us be the judge.”

In a tribute Mark’s family said: “As a family we are heartbroken. Mark was much loved by all of his family and we miss him so much. We desperately need to know what happened to Mark and would appeal to anybody that knows anything to contact the police.”

A Lancashire Police spokesperson added: “Police are aware of a number of comments on social media suggesting that Mr Fisher was a Registered Sex Offender which has caused understandable upset to his family. These rumours are untrue and we would ask people not to repeat them or to speculate.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting log number 0684 of Sunday, January 19.
