LOOKING BACK

-

YOUNGSTERS enjoying the artwork of local artists are featured in looking back this week.

A great turn out of curious art lovers flocked to Haworth Art Gallery to get a first look at the gallery’s January exhibition. Pictured top left are 12 year old Caroline Pearson (top) and 11 year old Shelley Barnes taking a look at a well known face on the gallery’s preview night.

Despite a smaller crowd than hoped for the annual Royal National Lifeboat Institute ball was a great success. More than 200 people danced the night away to the famous Northern Dance Orchestra to raise £350 for the lifeboat charity.

Pictured on the top right of the page, Mayor and Mayoress of Hyndburn, Tom and Monica Renshaw, are pictured amongst the guests at the ball.

Conhaltas ceoltoiri eireann may not mean much to most Hyndburn people.

It is the Gaelic translation of the Association of Irish Musicians of Ireland which was taking off in

Accrington in a big way in 1984.

Its aim was to promote Irish music, culture and language and it held regular events in the Hyndburn area and pictured right is one at the Victoria Hotel in Great Harwood. World championship harp player Celia Joyce provided the music on the night and she is pictured front left.

Finally this week, members past and present of the St Mary’s Church Choir, Oswaldtwistle, got together for a very special party to celebrate the 80th birthday of Mr William

Donohoe who had been organist at the church for 62 years.

Pictured below, on the front right of the photo, Billy, as he was affectionately known, was presented with a carriage clock by the choirmaster Mr John Henry (front left).

This week’s pictures and stories are taken from the Tuesday, January 10, 1984 edition of the Midweek Observer. If you have any photos you’d like to share with readers email them to communities@ menmedia.co.uk.
