Barrier crash hold-ups

TRAFFIC was held up on the M66 with long delays in both directions for several hours after a crash resulted in damage to a barrier.

North West Ambulance Service and Highways North West were called to the scene between junction 1 for A56 Walmersley Road (Ramsbottom) and junction 2 for Bury before 2.45pm on Tuesday, January 28.

Highways England tweeted at around 5.30pm: “Delays continue to rise approachin­g this #M66 incident. Journey times are at least 45 minutes longer than usual. We have resources at scene working hard to reopen lanes as soon as possible.”

Shortly afterwards they confirmed a northbound lane closure had been removed. Traffic was confirmed to be flowing normally by 8.30pm.

A North West Ambulance service spokespers­on said: “We were called at 14.42. We sent a rapid response vehicle but no one has been taken to hospital.”

MAN DETAINED

A MAN who was spotted walking along the M65 has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

The incident was reported to police by members of the public who spotted the man on the evening of Tuesday, January 28.

He was spotted on the motorway near Accrington.

Officers attended the scene and a 27-year-old man was detained under the Mental Health Act.

He is currently in hospital receiving treatment.

A spokespers­on for Lancashire Police said on Wednesday: “Thanks to everyone who reported the male walking along the M65 near Accrington last night.

“He is now in hospital getting the help that he needs.”
