Mary ended 30-year ‘feat’

-

A RETIRING manageress features in ‘Looking back’ this week.

Pictured on the top left of the page, Mrs Mary Thompson started work for Timpson’s Footwear 30 years prior, spending 15 years as a manageress.

She was rewarded for her faithful work when the company’s managing director, Mr John Timpson, visited the shop to present her with a carriage clock and a bouquet of flowers to mark her retirement.

She said at the time: “The part I liked best was serving my customers and meeting people.

“I’ve kept Accrington on its feet!”

The children of Oswaldtwistle St Mary’s Panto Group are pictured next (top right) as they were busy rehearsing for their forthcoming production of ‘Snow White and the seven dwarfs’.

For the two weeks running up to the show the children donned colourful costumes and paraded around Accrington Market to promote their show. Tickets were £1 for adults and 60p for children.

The new headquarters of the Transport and General Workers Union in Accrington was officially opened by general secretary Mr Moss Evans (pictured bottom right)

The modern offices cost £150,000 to build and were situated at 40-42 Abbey Street.

The new building enabled all the union businesses to be centralised and deal with the problems of members in the Rossendale Valley and Clitheroe, as well as Burnley, Blackburn and Hyndburn.

Pictured is Mr Evans at the new offices watched by Deputy Mayor Councillor

Jack Grime and local union officials.

Finally this week, Great Harwood Town drew one all with Skelmersdale United on January 6, 1984 and the first match of the year brought no change in fortunes for the home side. On this date the team had gone more than 10 months without a home win.

Pictured on the bottom left of the page is Harwood goalscorer Baz McGee, who held off the challenge of a Skelmersdale defender during the first half of Saturday’s clash at the showground.
