LEAGUE ONE STANLEY........................... 0 PETERBOROUGH ............ 2

ACCRINGTON Stanley’s poor run of form continued after they were beaten 2-0 at home by Peterborough United on Tuesday.

Goals from Sammie Szmodics and Joe Ward in each half were enough to earn Peterborough the win and condemn the Reds to defeat at the Wham Stadium.

It means Stanley have failed to win any of their games since the start of 2020, and manager John Coleman was frustrated to once again come up short.

“They were fortunate to score the goal they did as it took a massive deflection and we had chances before and after that,” he said.

“In the first half I think we were the better team but for the last few games we have conceded early in the second half and that’s been our downfall. It boosted their confidence and we got ragged after that.

“They are a good side and they could have had more but I believe, if we hadn’t conceded so early in the second half, that we would have had a chance to get something out of the game.

“I can’t fault my players’ work-rate or effort but we are conceding poor goals. All you can do is keep battling.

“We are trying to bring players in before Friday, we are trying really hard, we need a couple.”

Stanley were the better team in the opening stages of the match, with Peterborough’s Christy Pym the first goalkeeper called into action. He was on hand to superbly deny Wolves loanee Sadou Diallo in the third minute, preventing the Reds from taking the lead.

It proved to be a crucial save, as Peterborough opened the scoring after 11 minutes. Siriki Dembele broke free for the visitors before finding Szmodics in space, whose shot took a deflection off Mark Hughes and crept into the near post to score his second goal in only his third game for Posh and make it 1-0.

Coleman’s men tried to get back into the game, with Joe Pritchard firing an effort over the crossbar when he should have done.

Accrington goalkeeper Joe Bursik was then required to deny Frankie Kent and Szmodics before half-time, meaning the score remained 1-0 to Peterborough at the break.
