ACCRINGTON’S dogs will be able to put their best paw forward for a good cause at Accrington Lions’ “Pooch Parade” as part of its annual World Down Syndrome Day fun day.

The free event, which will be held on Saturday, March 21 at Mount Carmel High School, aims to raise awareness for the condition with a range of stalls and entertainment, and funds going to those affected.

This year, attendees can also enter their dogs in the “Pooch Parade” competition for £2, earning the chance to win in one of four categories - most talented, waggiest tail, best fancy dress, and for the dog that looks most like their owner.

Funds raised from this part of the day will go to Oswaldtwistle animal welfare charity Four Paws Rescue.

Suzzan Gilbert, president of Accrington Lions, said: “Historically the Lions’ presidents have their own fundraising area for the year so I chose to do this dog event.

“I believe that dogs need a chance and deserve respect. Four Paws make sure that the dogs do get good homes and they really rely on the public.”

Stars from Hollyoaks will also be present at the event, including Suzzan’s granddaughter Eva Lorente, who plays Minnie on the show.

In previous years the fun day has held a mini auction and played host to the Little Barn petting zoo as well as entertainers including a magician and balloon sculptor.

Five dogs have been entered for the competition so far.

But Suzzan says organisers are still hoping to receive many more.

“The event is to raise awareness of Down Syndrome,” she said.

“Now we’re just praying for the weather!”

Competitors can enter themselves and their dog for the parade by contacting Suzzan at suzzangilbert@outlook.com or on 01254 399550.

More information about the event can be found on Facebook.
