LOOKING BACK

-

THIS week’s pictures and stories are taken from the Tuesday, February 7, 1984 edition of the Midweek Observer.

The first photo, on the top left of the page, is of workers from the Mastabar group of companies, based at church held their annual dinner dance at the Berkley, Accrington.

Around 100 workers, along with their husbands, wives and friends, enjoyed a hearty meal followed by dancing to disco music.

Chairman of the club Mr Miller said : “everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It was tremendous.”

A raffle for a carriage clock was won by worker Mrs Betty Wright.

Underneath that, centre left, Law Society members from Hyndburn were among the 280 guests who attended the Society’s annual dinner at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel, Clayton-le-Moors, on Friday.

Speeches were made by the Law Society president Mr

Christopher Hewiston, Mr Peter Scholes, president of the Blackburn Law Association, Judge Ian Webster and Mr Peter Lampster.

Mr Scholes (centre) is pictured with (from left) John Whittaker, Christopher Hewitson, Hyndbuurn’s MP Mr Ken Hargreaves and Kenneth Negretton.

Mrs Margaret Wells, the head of the infant department at St Wulstan’s RC Primary School, Great Harwood, retired last week after 38 years service.

At a presentation ceremony in St Wulstan’s Church, Mrs Wells was given a gold bracelet and bouquet of flowers from the staff and pupils of the school.

Mrs Wells is pictured with her retirement gifts and some of the pupils at the school on the bottom left of the page.

Nearly 450 people attended the annual Frasers Motors promotions dance on Thursday, February 2, 1984.

The Hyndburn folk danced the night away to the famous Scottish Jim MacLeod Band at the Majestic Ballroom in Accrington.

Other local people went to a second dance at Lucas Social Club in Burnley because the Accrington event had been a sell out with some people being turned away.

Guests are pictured watching the raffle being drawn at the dance on the bottom right of the page.

Finally this week, Art enthusiasts had a wide selection of paintings and drawings to view when they attended the Haworth Art Gallery’s February exhibition.

Exhibitor Mrs Connie Corr of Clayton-le-Moors is pictured, below right, with one of her paintings.
