Follow the yellow brick road! Family’s support for key workers
A FAMILY have created a colourful joint activity to show their support for key workers during lockdown.
Derek Murray, wife Pamela, and children Paige, 23, and Tye, 21, have all been inspired by the couple’s youngest daughter Taya, five, to colour in the brick wall along Rising Bridge Road, in Rising Bridge.
Now at it for a fortnight, they have got through more than 30 boxes of chalk, some of which have been donated by well wishers who have seen their efforts on local Facebook groups, including the Rising Bridge Community page.
The family have written the job titles of key workers along the top of the wall, including consultants, medical engineers, porters, security workers, and more. Their pictures have been winning rave reviews on social media, including the Rising Bridge Community Facebook page.
Tesco night manager Derek Murray, 52, said: “We decided to cover the bricks, and our neighbours thought it was really good.
“It’s to support our key workers. We’ve had a bit of negativity, but mostly positive comments.
“We do about four or five hours a day if the weather is good. The whole family is involved.”
Taya has the mental age of a two and a half to three year old, as she has Global Development Delay, which causes a child to take longer to reach certain milestones - but she understands that it is for the NHS.
Derek added it has been a good way to spend time together as a family.
He said: “We posted it on local Facebook groups and the amount of people that liked it was great.
“People have been driving through or walking down with their own kids. Although Taya is a little bit behind, she loves it.
“The bonus for us is it’s the first time we’ve had quality time to do things as a family.
“We’ve spent a fortune on chalk, but it’s worth it!”
