DEREK WINDLE

MR Derek Windle passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 29, aged 84.

Loving husband of

Anne, he was a much loved dad of Kim and Angela and devoted grandad to John, Ellie and Katie.

He attended Woodnook School, Accrington where he was known as ‘the mighty atom’ by his headmaster for being a champion schoolboy swimmer and for his footballin­g skills.

He went on to play football for many teams including being in the Reserves for Accrington Stanley and received an offer to be signed as a profession­al footballer.

He obtained his City and Guilds in engineerin­g while completing his apprentice­ship as a skilled engineer and toolmaker at Lang Bridges, Accrington.

He worked all his life in engineerin­g and latterly in plastics moulding manufactur­ing at Le Profil.

Derek completed his National Service as a cook in the Army, he always liked to keep fit and even did some boxing.

Derek was a devoted family man and loved spending time with his children and grandchild­ren, taking them on long walks, playing football, helping them with their gardens and making them laugh. He will be fondly remembered by all his loving family and friends. After his retirement Derek maintained the garden at St Paul’s Church, Accrington for many years before moving to be near family in Leighton Buzzard in 2016.

Due to current circumstan­ces a small family service led by Rev Cate Irvine was held at Bierton Crematoriu­m on Monday, May 18.

MONA DALY

MRS Mona Daly died peacefully in Moorhead Rest home on Monday, May 18, aged 93.

She was the much loved wife of the late Anthony, devoted mother of Anne and Elaine, respected mother-in-law of Michael, cherished grandmothe­r of Sarah and Dominic, and a great-grandmothe­r to be.

Mona attended St

Anne’s School and was proud to have represente­d the school in diving competitio­ns and netball matches.

On leaving school at the age of 14, Mona became a weaver and for many years ran six looms at the Helene Mill on Grange Lane in Accrington.

Afterwards she worked at Catlow’s Fruit Market and then at the Woodlands Home for Older People in Clayton-le-Moors.

She was an active member of Sacred Heart Church, Accrington and enjoyed many social events there until its closure.

She then became a parishione­r of St Anne’s Church in Cobham Road, Accrington, which was where she and Tony had been married.

A private family service conducted by Rev. Fr. Stamp took place on Wednesday, May 27 at Accrington Crematoriu­m and will be followed by a Requiem Mass at St Anne’s Church when current restrictio­ns are lifted.

GWYN MAYO ROBINSON

PEACEFULLY and without pain at his home with his beloved wife at his side, Mr Gwyn Mayo Robinson, of Read and formerly of Foxhill Bank House, Oswaldtwis­tle, has died aged 82.

The devoted and much loved husband of Valerie, he was dear brother-in-law of Carole, loved uncle of Andrew and Kevin, great-uncle of Iona and Jay and great, great-uncle of Esmie and Lyle, as well as a dearly loved and respected friend to many.

Gwyn and Valerie were married in 1965 at St Peter’s Church,

Accrington. They lived and worked in Cambridge as teachers.

Gwyn was a teacher of History, Business Studies and Economics and was the head of 5th, 6th and

7th year. He was a wonderful teacher and a highly respected colleague.

In 1980, Gwyn and Val left teaching and the house that they had built to embark on a new business venture at Foxhill Bank House, they then ran a hockey centre providing residentia­l courses for school children and adult clubs.

Gwyn was the business brain who kept everyone happy and fed with 76 meals each day and was well renowned for his delicious apple pie and many other sweet desserts.

Gwyn was the former president of Oswaldtwis­tle Civic Society, chairman of Oswaldtwis­tle Prospects Panel, and secretary of the ORATE petition. He was the organiser of the first Oswaldtwis­tle Victorian Street Fair.

Away from his work he was a keen golf player and member of Accrington

Golf Club, and was the treasurer for the seniors for over nine years. He was an avid walker and loved getting out into the open air with his wife Val and his beloved Dobermans.

Gwyn was a highly respected gentleman and often described as a lovely human being who would help anyone with anything, he never judged people and always respected other people’s opinions.

ALLEN WOODCOCK

MR Allen Woodcock, of Belfield Road, Accrington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, in hospital, aged 70.

During his working life Allen had various jobs, including working at Huncoat Power Station and also for TNT as a LGV driver until his retirement.

In his spare time and during his retirement he enjoyed following and watching a range of sports, including football and horse racing.

He enjoyed socialisin­g and also took up parachutin­g as a hobby after a completing a charity sky-dive in the 1980s.

Allen sadly leaves behind his beloved wife Susan, his much loved daughters Janet and

Lynne, his treasured grandchild­ren Abbie, Katie, Gabrielle and Cameron, also his dear nephew Michael and numerous cousins.

A private family funeral service will be held, due to the current restrictio­ns.

Donations in memory of Allen are being received for the North West Ambulance Service, either over the phone or by envelope drop-off at the funeral home (Accrington or Oswaldtwis­tle).

KATHLEEN HOLDEN

PEACEFULLY, on Thursday, May 21, at Wellfield House Care Home, Kathleen Holden, devoted wife of the ‘late’ Vincent, beloved mum of Stephen and Carole, dear mother-in-law of Linda and Chris, and loving grandma and greatgrand­ma.

In her teens she started work for British Rail in Blackburn as a clerk, until she married Vincent in 1949 and moved to their first home in Baxenden (where Kathleen lived until November 2018).

When children came along, she practised Chiropody, working from home.

In later years she went to work for Whitbread’s in Blackburn as a clerk until she retired in the early eighties.

During retirement she enjoyed voluntary work at the Alex Home in Accrington, assisting young adults with physical disabiliti­es whilst being a very ‘hands on ‘Grandma’, sewing and knitting for the children. She was an active member of St Anne’s Church, Accrington.

Along with Vincent, she enjoyed holidays in

Europe and the UK. She was the heart of the family and will be sorely missed.

The funeral will take place at Accrington Cemetery on Friday, May 29 at 11am. Due to Covid 19, it will be a graveside service for close family, although paying respect from a distance will be welcome.

No flowers please but donations, if desired, to Kathleen’s chosen charity, East Lancashire Hospice can be handed to Hyndburn Funeral Services, Queens Road, Accrington.

EUNICE Butterwort­h, nee Cregg, passed away peacefully with her girls by her side on Tuesday, May 19 at Wellfield Residentia­l Home, age 92.

She was the loving wife of the late James (Jim), the much loved and cherished mum of Janet and Anne, dear mother-in-law of Anthony and Ian, devoted gran of Helen, Tom and Catherine and great-gran to Elliott. A very dear auntie and close friend to many.

Eunice was born in Annie Street, only daughter of Hannah and Hubert Cregg.

She attended St John’s School, Accrington and started work at Belgarth Works aged 14 as a brush maker, then English Electric as a Radar Assembler for the war period, returning to brushmakin­g with Ewbank and Accrington Brush Works until she retired.

She maintained lifelong friendship­s with school friends, work colleagues and neighbours.

Eunice and Jim married in March 1953 and set up family home in Aitken Street, where Janet and Anne were born, eventually returning to her birth home.

They were happily married for 53 years until Jim died in 2006. They loved their holidays abroad with their family, especially the Greek Islands and Spain, and the many touring holidays in Scotland and Yorkshire.

At home her favourite pastimes were sewing, knitting, watching sport and loving the time with her family and friends catching up on all the goings on. She was a great letter writer and told such interestin­g and funny stories.

Our grateful thanks go to the devoted staff at Wellfield Residentia­l Home, where mum lived for the past six years, where she enjoyed her singing, entertaini­ng residents with her renditions.

Eunice will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all those who knew her.

DAVID BARLOW

MR David (Charlie)

Barlow died suddenly in Royal Blackburn Hospital on Tuesday, May 19, aged 69.

Devoted and much loved husband of Sandra, he was adored dad of Craig, Jon and Natalie, dear father-in-law of Dianne, Vicky and Matt, dearly loved grandad of Lydia, Ellie and Sasha, and a much loved friend to many.

David recently moved to Brockhall Village after spending most of his life in Oswaldtwis­tle.

He was a keen footballer in his younger days, playing for various clubs, including Fairfield United.

He was a lifelong member of James Street WMC before its closure and more recently the Rhoden Inn, where he had a lot of friends.

He was also a Blackburn Rovers season ticket holder for many years.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 1 at 1pm at Accrington Crematoriu­m.
