Call for camera on danger road

-

A PETITION is calling for a speed camera on a road dubbed “the most dangerous in Hyndburn”.

Despite junction “improvements”, organiser St Oswalds councillor Glen Harrison said speeding along Blackburn Road, in Oswaldtwistle, has not been curbed.

He says motorists have been caught travelling up to 80mph on the road which has both 40mph and 50mph zones. The petition has gained more than 150 signatures.

Coun Harrison said: “Lancashire County Council (LCC) have made some improvements, such as improving visibility on junctions but the issue is that this has not improved accidents or speeding. A speed camera is the only way to slow down traffic.

“If you put double yellow lines down people will still park on them because there’s no one there to enforce it. It would cost you money to race down there at breakneck speeds. There are still a lot of accidents and I have received repeated complaints.

“People don’t bother slowing down from the open road when they drive into the built up area.”

An LCC spokesman said the location was recently assessed, adding: “Blackburn Road already receives police mobile speed enforcement at many different locations along its length, and following the latest assessment we installed temporary signage to remind drivers to think about their speed.

“The police advise that residents should contact them directly about issues such as repeated incidents of nuisance and/or dangerous driving, ideally providing the registration numbers of the vehicles. A safety scheme was recently installed to address the pattern of collisions which had occurred at a number of the side-road junctions, designed to improve visibility, slow traffic, and make it easier for pedestrians to cross.” To sign the petition visit change.org and search for ‘Glen Harrison’.
