MUST LEARN FROM PAST

-

I WRITE in response to three letters printed on the letters page in the Observer (June 18).

The three letters I refer to were from Mrs Jane Singleton, Mr Les Park and Darryl Ashton.

I applaud these three people heartily.

Councillor Dad did not even to bother to ask Hyndburn people if they wanted the Town Hall lighting up for the memory of George Floyd, which I find extremely annoying to say the least.

I fully realise there are racists in the world no matter which country they live in and sadly there always will be, but we must try to learn from past mistakes.

The pulling down of statues is not the answer and leads to even more friction, and alienation.

Which statue is next? Queen Victoria – Empress of India?

Pulling down statues and removing them will not alter the past and one must not forget that it was two English Parliamentarians who worked very hard to abolish slavery, because they saw it for what it was – a vile, cruel and disgusting trade, and all for vast profits.

Man’s greed again! We have enough problems of our own in the U.K to deal with, never mind America’s problems.

Their policing methods are not ours and we should stay out of it and let America deal with this problem. The three police officers concerned are being dealt with by the Justice system over there.

One final point which I find extremely irritating is people kneeling down – what for? Mr Starmer looked ridiculous.

It’s sending out the wrong message here as well. The BLM movement shouts for Justice – what kind of justice are they seeking and for whom?

There is only one person I will kneel before, and he was nailed to a Cross over 2,000 years ago.

Mrs Ann Siburuth Clayton-le-Moors
