AHAIRDRESSER is giving lockdown stress the chop with a new mobile barber shop that comes straight to your door.

Mahmut Korkmaz, who also owns Moturk Barbers on Blackburn Road, Great Harwood, launched his new fully equipped barber shop van last week, and is taking online bookings now.

Haircut services have been allowed since the easing of lockdown on July 4, but the process is still restricted by Covid-19 safety procedures.

Mahmut, known as Mo, says he came up with the idea as a way of making the experience safer and more convenient for customers.

Mo said: “When the lockdown started and we had to shut the shop down, I was at home and seeing Tescos and Morrisons doing deliveries to houses. I thought I can deliver a haircut with a similar system. I bought a van and started building it.

“They are just going on my website, they book the van, and we go to their street. They come out of the house and get their hair cut, so they don’t have to travel.

“While people have a 10 to 15-minute break they can get a haircut.”

The mobile service will cover Great Harwood, Rishton, Clayton-leMoors, Whalley Village, Accrington, Clitheroe and Blackburn.

Currently cuts are charged at a flat rate of £20, but Mo says he is developing a more advanced, variable price system adjusting to the distance travelled by the van.

He is hoping the idea might take off and be expanded further afield to other parts of Lancashire, Manchester, and Liverpool.

“I built it fully like a barber shop,” he said.

“They can sit down while having their hair cut and watch the football.

“I’m not a hero and I’m not working for the NHS, but I can still do something in my field to minimise the risk.

“I’m not really happy with the situation just now. Next door is Blackburn with Darwen and they might face a lockdown.

“If everybody cares about themselves and takes precautions, no-one will be at risk.”
