Call for crackdown on the ‘boy racers’

-

A COUNTY councillor says the police need to do more to crack down on anti-social speeding by boy racers.

Oswaldtwistle County Coun Peter Britcliffe has also demanded to know why local requests for speed cameras are being snubbed “point blank”.

The former Hyndburn council leader has called for Lancashire County Council’s (LCC) speed management group to appear before councillors to explain their strategy.

County Coun Britcliffe believes speed cameras, are badly needed in Oswaldtwistle, including on Blackburn Road and in Stanhill.

He told the Observer: “I’m a little bit disturbed that all requests for speed cameras are turned down point blank by the speed management group, which is made up of LCC officers, the police and various services. At the moment any request for speed cameras is met with ‘we don’t put speed cameras in now’. I think that’s very disappointing.

“At the moment we seem to be spending thousands of pounds on safety measures. Actually, they’re areas where, if you put a speed camera in it would help to solve the problem. We have to crack down on speed. The police need to be taking far more action than they seem to be, especially to curb the boy racers.”

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said:

“Speeding has been one of our key priorities at Hyndburn this month which we identified as a community concern from Lancashire Talking. In response to this we have carried out plenty of activity/enforcement in relevant hotspots inclusive of Oswaldtwistle. We will continue to do so whilst this remains a community concern.”

Lancashire County Council have been contacted with requests for a comment.
