THE name Jack Barrett is still widely revered at Accrington Stanley with one of the stands bearing his name in recognition of his famous fundraising walk from Liverpool to Accrington in 1968.

His walk was one of the catalysts which resulted in the rebirth of Accrington Stanley in 1968 and earned Jack the Freedom of the Borough in later years.

The Official Accrington Stanley Supporters Trust are sending a few intrepid members to replicate this feat on Sunday, October 11, when they undertake the 40 miles from Stanley (Park) to Stanley (ASFC).

Joshua Adcroft, Andrew Camm, James Cheverton and Anthony Murgatroyd are helping to raise funds to support the football club in difficult times.

Further groups will also be walking on the same day from both Deepdale, Preston North End, (15 miles) and Blackburn Rovers’ Ewood Park for the 6.6-mile stroll back to Livingstone Road.

The Trust’s chairman Peter Leatham said: “Unfortunately all our fundraising has been severely hampered by the current pandemic, so we had to be creative, and replicating Jack’s famous walk seemed entirely appropriate in today’s difficult circumstances. We are greatly indebted to Josh, Andrew, James and Anthony for undertaking the 40-mile walk and also to those supporters who are walking from both Preston and Blackburn.”

Any donations can be made either in the Supporters shop in Accrington Market Hall or online at www.gofundme.com/f/stanleythewalk
