DUE to the Covid-19 pandemic, 2020 has been a washout for mass attendance public events in Accrington - along with elsewhere, of course.

However, attentions are now being focused longingly ahead to better times next year - with some new and familiar events looming on the horizon.

The AmazingAccrington promotional team are hoping to draw on the spirit of 2019 - after the town enjoyed several festivals and major showpiece events.

They are now in a position to launch their exciting 2021 proposed schedule of events - although all current guidance will, of course, be followed nearer the time.

A busy line-up in Accrington’s Town Square includes a bus and bike fest on Saturday, April 24, a live music festival on Saturday, May 15, and Accrington’s Food Festival and Second World War Re-enactment event returning “bigger and better” on Saturday, June 5 - the same weekend as a three-day beer festival in the town hall.

Later in the summer, the weekend of August 28-29 will see the return of the popular Soapbox Challenge, showcased not only in Accrington town centre on the Saturday, but also on Queen Street in Great Harwood on the Sunday. And, new for 2021, Saturday, September 25 will see Accrington Day, in collaboration with Hyndburn Borough Council.

Hyndburn council leader Coun Miles Parkinson said: “The team at AmazingAccrington have really elevated the town’s events over recent years, bringing in thousands of visitors and really giving a boost to our town centre.

“They always put on a high quality event worth going to, and draw people in.”

MP Sara Britcliffe said. “I’m really looking forward to getting our town centres back to normality post Covid-19 restrictions.

“This is a fabulous lineup of events for our residents and visitors, and I’m particularly looking forward to the Accrington Day where we can get together and celebrate our achievements in business, retail and football amongst others - they’re really something to be proud of.”
