Historic street on market for £250k

-

A STREET which forms part of possibly Accrington’s earliest settlement is being sold at auction - with a starting price of just £250,000.

A row of Grade

II-listed properties which span Abbey Street, Black Abbey Street and Jacob Street, are being advertised as an “excellent” development opportunity for potential buyers.

Included in the lot is 104-106 Abbey Street, a former coach house now used as storage space, plus 108 Abbey Street, a self-contained, twostorey office premises.

Additionally, buyers will get 1-11 Black

Abbey Street and 1 Jacob Street, which were formerly a stables, cottage and barn, complete with a tarmacked parking space for up to six vehicles.

The total area covered by the properties in the listing is 19,555 sq ft, with the guide price listed at £250,000 plus fees.

Back in 2018, the Observer reported on how a certificate of lawfulness application was submitted to establish whether 1-11

Black Abbey Street and 1 Jacob Street could be demolished without planning permission.

Developers wanted to redevelop the ‘semiderelict’ site for housing, alongside the conversion of the adjacent Grade II-listed 104 Abbey Street to residential. The council’s conservation officer was quoted as saying that the row of “the old Red Lion pub, its stables and barn and the adjacent row of cottages were some of the first buildings in Accrington, originally surrounded by fields.”

Near the town centre and railway station, properties near to Black Abbey Street sell for an average price of £67,000, and have increased in value by around 30 per cent this year compared to 2019.

On Abbey Street, the average sale price is around £74,000.

This is up by 19 per cent on last year.

The auction was due to take place on Thursday, November 26 at 10.30am via SDL Auctions.

The event will take place online to registered bidders only.
