New dad Cam’s clean sheet delight
IN a very eventful week for in-form Accrington Stanley man Cameron Burgess - whose partner gave birth to their first child this week - the Australian was full of praise for their defensive performance as Stanley kept a fourth consecutive clean sheet in all competitions for the first time since 2005 in a 0-0 draw against Lincoln City.
“The clean sheet’s a big thing, and that gives you a platform to build on,” he said.
“It’s something us defenders look for and speak about after the game. It’s something to take pride from and that’s what we are there for.
“I don’t even think its just the defensive unit, it’s the whole team. We defend from the front, we do things right, honestly, work hard and that’s where it stems from. We do that right and the rest falls into place,” he continued.
“The boys who maybe aren’t playing at the moment, that’s what they train for to come in and do the exact same job. I don’t think much has changed from the performances, except for maybe the personnel. Long may it continue hopefully.”
Burgess has been on standby for the last couple of games in anticipation for the birth, but he has found comfort in football during such a hectic time.
“I drove to Barrow and Swindon as well, believe it or not. It’s just one of the things you have to do, just waiting for that phone call and thankfully it happened between them games. You get your head on the game, play the game while you’re here and when you go home, it’s hoping for that phone call and good news, thankfully that came.
“Settled now and really enjoying it, that’s the main thing. If you’re enjoying your football it goes hand in hand at home and obviously good things happening at home as well, so [its] pleasing all round!
