MISS Barbara Ward, of Baxenden, died peacefully at home, aged 82, on Thursday, December 3, following a long battle with cancer.

After moving to Accrington from Chorley, she attended what was then Spring Hill Junior School and Accrington High School.

A two-year demonstrat­ors course at the Royal Technical College, Salford led to her spending several years as a demonstrat­or with the North Western Electricit­y Board.

Based in Barrow-inFurness, she covered the southern Lake District.

Subsequent­ly she was part of the staff training scheme with Singer Sewing Machines, a Home Economics Instructor at HMP Styal and finally a lecturer in Home Economics at Accrington and Rossendale College until her retirement.

A long-time member of Soroptimis­t Internatio­nal, she was twice president of the Accrington club and later joined S.I. Rossendale.

Barbara also had a long connection with Guiding from her early days as a Brownie, through to being an active member of first Accrington, then Rossendale Trefoil Guild.

She is survived by her sister Hilary.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, December 17, at 11.40am at Accrington Crematoriu­m.

The devoted wife of the late Ted, loving and loved mum of John, Paul and Christine, dear mother-inlaw of Lynn and John, cherished grandma of Mark, Karen, Calum,

Aidan and Glen, and great-grandma of Kian and Jessica, and also a dearly loved and respected relative and friend to many.

Born in Ballyjames­duff, Co. Cavan, Ireland, Madge moved to England in 1942, aged 22, to train as a much needed nurse during wartime Britain.

In 1949 she married Ted, and their family of three children soon followed.

Her working life was spent as a nurse at Calderston­es and Brockhall Hospitals until her retirement aged 64.

Madge was passionate about her work and devoted her whole life to helping others.

She championed the rights of the mentally disabled and was always generous and giving of her time and energies.

A devout Catholic, she worked tirelessly for Church causes and was an active member of the Legion of Mary for many years.

Holidays for Madge were often spent in her beloved Ireland visiting her family and friends.

She was highly respected and loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

Father Ian Farrell on Friday, December 11, during a private family funeral at St Mary’s RC Church, Clayton-le-Moors.

Madge will then be laid to rest with her husband Ted at Dill Hall Cemetery.

He then moved to Leicester to continue his hairdressi­ng for a number of years.

He then had a change of career and spent some time working at Butlins, which in turn led to an opportunit­y for him to work on cruise ships.

He later returned to Accrington and took up employment at Lupton Bros in the town, where he remained up to his retirement.

Wilf was a member of the Baxenden Walking Club.

He was also a keen dancer and an avid reader, regularly visiting his local library in Accrington.

Wilf was the husband of the late Brenda.

He was also brother of the late Alfred, Leonard, William, Edward, Mary, and Joan.

The funeral was held on Wednesday, December 9, at Accrington Crematoriu­m, led by Fr Simon Stamp.
