Baxter saved well from a Zain Westbrook shot to ensure Stanley stayed in the ascendancy and referee Robert Lewis brought the half to an end and as the dust settled Stanley found themselves 4-1 to the good.

Coleman, in his postmatch thoughts, felt his side had made it count when it mattered- “The first half was open, with both teams going at it hammer and tongue and I think Bristol were a little unlucky because they created some good chances. We were ruthless.”

There were changes at half time as Harvey Rodgers and Cameron Burgess replaced Tariq Uwakwe and Micheal Nottingham respective­ly. Jon Russell had come on in the first half, replacing Matt Butcher who suffered a knock and had to come off.

Three minutes into the second half and great link up play from Charles and Pritchard resulted in Charles forcing a save from Day, Bishop was racing in and tapped in the follow up to make sure both Stanley strikers would now battle it out to try and take home the match ball.

Seven minutes after that, with the bit between his teeth Bishop nearly won that battle, gathering the ball well on the edge of the box he controlled the ball with his chest, flicked it over his marker onto his preferred right foot and volleyed towards goal. Day was stretched but saved well over his bar.

Paul Smyth then entered the fray, replacing Pritchard.

The game approached the 70-minute mark and looked to be descending into some level of ease but, then Stanley struck again. Sean McConville released Smyth who cut back inside and played a ball perfectly into the midst of Charles who flicked past Day and had his hat-trick.

There was still time or Seamus Conneely to smash against the post, almost equalling Stanley’s romp against Bolton last season.

Finally, that was the end of the action and as the rain continued to pour Stanley had embarrasse­d Rovers and sent them back home after a night to forget.
