A DECISION on how promotion and relegation will be implemented at the end of the rugby league season has yet to be made.
Details of the Championship and League 1 campaigns were revealed by the RFL on
Sunday as it published the fixture lists for both competitions.
But the release notably didn’t address details surrounding the end of season play-offs, which have previously been used to determine which clubs would be promoted.
It is understood a decision regarding promotion and relegation across the leagues has been delayed, with the governing body reluctant to commit to anything while Super League TV negotiations are ongoing.
The delay is thought to be precautionary. Though yet another restructure is not expected in the immediate future, the RFL is aware ongoing negotiations with Sky could change course as they develop.
If a league restructure was to happen it would change how, or if, promotion and relegation would occur. Rugby league is braced for a reduced TV deal and it’s believed that Super
League is currently trying to negotiate a shorter deal, which will allow the sport to reassess and restructure following the news that Super League’s executive chairman Robert Elstone is to resign.
The current deal expires at the end of the season.
Earlier this year, the governing body confirmed plans for a six-team play-off in the Championship to determine the team promoted to the top tier. Two teams were to be relegated to League 1, with the team finishing top of the third-tier granted promotion along with the play-off winners.
