CHATS AND CRAFTS AROUND THE CAMPFIRE

-

Nestled in a secluded spot at Bowley Scout Camp in Great Harwood the campfire is lit, warm drinks are served, and people are invited to take a seat for chats and crafts. A relaxed atmosphere with a view, the Community Interest Organisation, Outdoors 4 All, have been running their campfire and conversation sessions throughout the pandemic.

Open to anyone who would like to join in, the purpose is to provide a safe space for socialising and learning, particularly for those who have felt isolated during the last year. Outdoors 4 All Together were successful in their bid to the Hyndburn Community Champions small grants scheme, this additional funding means they can continue their great work and offer additional sessions for the people of Hyndburn.

With a focus on creative crafts and nature the campfire sessions have included frying nettles on the open fire to eat, carving wood and other mindful activities. All wrapped up with warm conversation, lots of laughs and a fantastic sense of community spirit. Organisers Anna and Glen welcome people with a huge smile and kick-start the activities with refreshments.

Anna: “It is a pleasure to see what a difference these sessions make. Some people have not left their house over the last 12 months other than for medical appointments, others have had their social lives come to a stop because of the pandemic.

“The group brings people together in a relaxed setting where we can learn new skills and forget the worries of the outside world for a couple of hours.”

Glen: “Through the Hyndburn Community Champions funding we have been able to add on extra sessions and hopefully will reach even more people. I am really proud to be part of this, after such a difficult year many people are experiencing isolation or anxiety about getting out and about again. The feedback from those attending has been great and I have watched friendships form between people who may not have otherwise met. Not only is it an opportunity to socialise and learn, it is important for our mental health that we all find ways to connect again.”
