Savin caps breakthrough season with super display

-

TOBY Savin celebrated a remarkable breakthrough season with a man of the match display in Stanley’s victory at Portsmouth at the weekend.

The 19-year-old began the campaign in John Coleman’s starting XI but looked set to step down when the Reds recruited Chelsea loanee Nathan Baxter.

However, Savin’s displays were so good that Baxter was left frustrated on the bench until October.

Baxter then enjoyed a fine run in the side until injury in March cut short his season.

“It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions and looking back it’s been a brilliant season to do it, being such a young age, starting and finishing the season with thirty-odd games under my belt, I’m happy,” said Savin after the 1-0 win at Fratton Park.

“Next season is going to be exciting with some big teams coming into the division and the crowds coming back.

“It feels like friendlies every week (without crowds) but it’s been a nice little settler into League One football so hopefully once the crowds do come back I can settle in nicely.

“It was a really good performance (at

Pompey), I thought the boys defended brilliantly which made my job easier and to come away and do it at a ground like Portsmouth on the last day of the season was a good feeling.

“Portsmouth came out a different team in the second half but I thought we matched them at the back and defended brilliantly, won every header and I can’t remember being too troubled.

“I swept up quite well and the boys did their jobs when they had to.”
