Diamond couple Isabella and Robert Rae had a sparkling day as they celebrated six decades of happy marriage.

The Greengairs couple had a visit from North Lanarkshire provost Jim Robertson as they marked their 60th wedding anniversary.

Robert, 85, and Isabella, 84, were married at Sir John Wilson town hall in Airdrie on July 11, 1956.

Both lived in the village for their entire lives and spent much of their childhoods living just doors apart on the same street.

Each attended secondary school at Airdrie Central and Robert worked as a miner while Isabella worked in the pit’s canteen.

The couple have four sons — Robert, Frank, William and Richard — as well as eight grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Robert and Isabella are members of the village’s Gospel Hall church.

As well as celebrating their diamond anniversary with a family celebration at their Hillview home, they were also delighted to receive a visit from Provost Robertson to mark the special occasion.

He presented the happy couple wi t h flowers, a commemorative bottle of whisky and a s p e c i a l l y - f ramed certificate.

Family friend Maria Donovan said: “Robert and Isabella are a lovely couple, and have lived in Greengairs for their entire lives.

“They were over the moon to have a visit from the Provost to have tea with them to mark their anniversary.”
