Carsons celebrate Super Cup triumph

Eagle Inn edged out in the final

- Colin Paterson

The final team event of the Airdrie and District Darts League season was the Super Cup which took place lastMonday night.

This featured the top five teams in the league at the halfway stage – plus the winners of The Harlequin Trophy, Banks’ Social Club.

Carsons Bar were expected to win the round-robin event but both Workmen’s B and the Eagle Inn were given outside chances.

The first session of games were tight but Terry McPake of The Swan started off on what was a good night for him with an 18-darter in the match against Workies B.

McPake also had 15 and 16-darters later in the evening.

This helped The Swan to a narrow win. With Carsons just beating The Clansman and the other two sides drawing, it was very close.

In the next series of matches, Banks’ Club had another draw, this time against The Clansman. Dan O’Hara produced an18darter in this game.

Carsons came from 3- 1 down to beat Workies B with Guy Ferguson good here for the latter with a 17-darter against new singles champ Ernie Brown.

The Eagle beat The Swan and The Clansman in their next games, setting them up as main challengers to Carsons but Workies B were hot on their tails after thrashing Banks’ Club.

However, Eagle ended their hopes with a fine win to keep them in the hunt but Carsons thrashed Banks’ Club.

That meant the Eagle would need to beat Carsons 6-2 to take the Super Cup title. The Eagle’s Peter Cumming played well on the night and a 17-darter here got his side off to a great start.

However, Derek Cunningham in 16 darts and Ernie Brown in 18 put Carsons in the driving seat.

Despite a rally later on, Carsons ran out 5-3 winners to take the Super Cup title to add to the league championship they had already clinched.
