CHAIRMAN RONNIE BOYD

-

Albion Rovers’ new chairman Ronnie Boyd would like more fans to come to the Exsel Group Stadium, inset Betfred Cup gives us a few chances at doing the best we can.

“There has been a bit of controversy around under- 20s teams coming into the IRN-BRU Cup. If we beat one of those sides it will be a great idea – if we lose to them it will be a terrible idea!”

Q. What are your thoughts on the future of the game?

A. “I’m optimistic but we do face challenges. I remember the days when I went to games with my father and there were very few alternatives to football.

“Now people can’t make it because they are away to things like The Open, for example. We have to do our best to sell the club, make it attractive for people to come on a Saturday, be welcoming and put a good product on the park. We want people to go away thinking it was an experience worthy of them parting with their hard-earned money.

“I think the future for clubs like Albion Rovers is building up close community links, getting people in and around the ground and feeling pride in their local team. I joked at work that I supported one of the top three clubs in the world – Barcelona, Real Madrid and Albion Rovers. “We are a wee bit away from that – but we want to do the best we can.”

Q. Finally, what represents success this season?

A. “I have spoken to Darren [ Young, player/manager] about that. We want to do as well as we can in the cups and make some money along the way.

“A repeat of last season in the league would be wonderful. But if we stay up again that would be a tremendous achievement for a club this size.

“We are always looking to get to the next level and that, for us, would really be getting to the play-offs. Promotion to the Championship would be a dream come true.”
