Brave trio lose locks to help cancer charity

Over £450 donated

- Ian Bunting

Three kind- hearted Monklands men will be hoping for a few more warm days before the summer ends after undergoing a close shave for a great cause.

Carnbroe’s Gerry Malone and his son David and step-grandson Kalvin Dunbar – both from Petersburn – are all sporting crew cuts following their participation in Macmillan Cancer Support’s ‘Brave the Shave’ campaign.

The generous trio took to the barber’s chair to get all of their hair cut off, with Gerry and David also bidding farewell to their beards.

Hairdresser David, 32, actually did the honours and gave Gerry, 52, and Kalvin, 17, their new smooth- scalped looks at his Barber Shop 13 business, based on Airdrie’s Aitchison Street.

Gerry said: “We saw the ‘Brave the Shave’ campaign plugged online and decided to go for it.

“I grew my hair and beard over a couple of months and David and I got our hair and beards shaved off, while Kalvin kept his facial hair.

“The new look felt a bit cold to start with – and my wife said ‘stay where you are, I’m not sure I’ll be home later’ when she first saw it – but it’s worthwhile to get it done for such a wonderful charity.”

The considerate crew have raised over £450 for Macmillan Cancer Support – and Gerry has an extra special reason to be happy with their fundraising efforts.

He said: “I lost my brother Joe to cancer last year and we wanted to do all we could for Macmillan.

“We are over the moon with how much has been donated and thank everyone for their contributions.

“It ’ s also about raising awareness and highlighting the great work that Macmillan do to help people with cancer.”

David is also taking part in a Half Iron Man event next month in aid of Macmillan and people can make donations at www.justgiving.com/ David-Malone5
