Nightclub yob warned over attitude

- Court reporter

A Whinhall yob who challenged people to a fight outside a popular Coatbridge nightspot before resisting arrest has been warned he faces jail if he maintains his poor attitude towards court officials.

Shane Keys, 28, behaved in a threatening and abusive manner near the entrance to 30s Soul Suite, on Coatbridge Main Street, on January 3.

His efforts to start a fight placed others in a state of fear and alarm and police were called to the scene outside the town centre venue.

Keys, of Whinhall Avenue, then resisted two cops’ attempts to place him under arrest by lashing out with his arms, trying to break free of their grip and refusing to be handcuffed.

He was eventually taken into custody and admitted his guilt during an appearance at Airdrie Sheriff Court on July 20.

Sentence was deferred until last Wednesday for social work background reports and Keys’ defence solicitor, Matthew Barlow, told the court: “He is on an existing [court] order but thus far his attitude has not been great.

“He is in full- time employment and works night shifts, so doesn’t get much sleep, which may make his demeanour appear aggressive during appointments [ with the social work department].

“He has kept out of trouble since this offence. But he has to work on his attitude.”

Sheriff Derek O’Carroll announced he was further deferring sentencing on Keys until November 9 for updated criminal justice social work reports and warned Keys to be of good behaviour for the next three months.

The sheriff told Keys: “Depending on the reports, it will be jail or a restriction of liberty order.

“If your attitude remains the same, then you know what the future is likely to bring.”
