Playground joy for pupils of St Patrick’s

- Andrew Bargh

Pupils at St Patrick’s Primary School in Coatbridge are having a ball with new equipment that has been added to their playground.

An £8000 grant from Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme has allowed for the introduction of a trim trail, basketball hoops and a small amphitheatre for outdoor learning.

The grant was applied for last November before Tesco customers voted for who they believed should get the new equipment.

Victoria Primary School in Airdrie also benefited from the scheme.

Primary six/ seven teacher Louise Whomes applied for the grant along with P7 teacher Marie Shaw.

And she is delighted with the impact the new equipment has made.

She said: “It is a large playground that had nothing in it so the children were getting bored easily.

“We spoke to the citizenship group in the school and the pupils decided these were the items they wanted with the grant.

“They are absolutely loving it; we’ve got a rota going so everyone gets level playing time with it.

“It’s primarily for the senior pupils but all classes can use it during gym time.”

Louise says the addition of the amphitheatre is great for being able to teach the pupils outside.

She added: “The seating will be used as an outside learning area so classes can go outside.

“It will be great in good weather when they are able to go and play, too.

“Since we got it there has been no hassle in the playground at all.”
