Carsons clinch Summer League

Title joy while The Swan are best of the rest

- Andrew Bargh

Carsons Bar wrapped up the Airdrie and District Summer Darts League title in style after waltzing to victory in their final two games.

A whitewash of The Lounge secured the championship before a routine win against The Boar’s Head.

Ernie Brown shone for Carsons with a 15-darter as well as Graham Anderson who checked out with 153.

By contrast, the battle for second place went down to the wire with The Swan holding a one point advantage over Workmen’s B.

The former increased their lead after crushing Wilson Arms 9-1 at the same time as Workies B conceded three legs against The Boar’s Head, meaning they had a mountain to climb when the pair clashed next.

The Workies required six legs against the team in pole position for runners-up spot.

It was the Chapelhall men who got off to a flyer when Jim Parker nailed a 15- darter and a 156 checkout to help them race into a 2-0 lead.

The chasers responded and fought back but The Swan claimed the next two matches to ensure they were the best of the rest.

The European Challenge Open took place at Airdrie’s working men’s club on Sunday with some big names in tow.

World No 9 Micahel ‘Bully Boy’ Smith was one of the famous TV names who was taken on by the locals as players battled it out for the £3500 top prize.

However, Ryan Murray knocked him out early-on shortly after Gary Stone was disposed of.

By the time the last 16 arrived, local stars were few and far between although Carsons boasted three.

They were bereft of luck, though, as Graham Anderson drew teammate Jim Brown with the latter triumphing 4- 2 before being defeated by Darren Beverdige at the quarter-final stage.

Carsons’ other hope, Cameron Menzies, was in good form and entered his last- 16 tie with Paul Brydon as the favourite but he was put to the sword by the Englishman.

Two- time runner- up Brian Pecker from Aberdeen won the event after beating Greenock’s Mark Barilli 6-3 in the final.
