Rovers’ luck will turn insists Boyd On-loan ace says team can be a league force

- Joseph James

Steven Boyd reckons Albion Rovers will be a force to be reckoned with – as soon as they start taking their chances.

The attacking midfielder, who is on loan from Hamilton Accies, has started both matches since joining from his parent club.

He helped the Coatbridge side to a 2-2 draw at Peterhead but was on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline at home to Alloa Athletic on Saturday.

However, despite a slow start to the campaign, Boyd suggests that once the side are back to full- strength, and finish the opportunities that come their way, Rovers will begin to shoot up the League One table.

The 19-year-old said: “We just need to do what we’re doing but be more clinical whilst going forward.

“When we get chances, we’ve just got to take them.

“I’m sure that once we get that much-needed first win, we’ll go on and get plenty more victories.

“We were all hugely disappointed to lose Saturday’s game.

“I felt we were good in the first half, creating the better of the chances and keeping it tight at the back. But to end up finishing 4-0 down is a really sore one for all the boys in the dressing-room to take.

“The first goal was a lucky deflection and it perhaps put our heads down a bit and it just thereafter went downhill.

“We should have stayed mentally stronger, kept it tight at the back and looked to counter-attack to get back into it.

“That’s when the boys are at their best; playing with a solid defensive shape and using our pace on the counter to hurt teams.”

Boyd will miss this Saturday’s IRN- BRU Cup Third Round tie with St Mirren having already played for Accies Under-20s in the competition.

However, he insists he is benefiting from his spell at the Exsel Group Stadium.

“It’s been a really good couple of weeks in terms of my development as a footballer,” Boyd added.

“The coaches have been first class and those around the club work hugely hard to provide the players with a professional environment to play their football in.

“Also, the supporters have been really supportive of me so far.”

Boyd certainly has the right attitude to make his stint in Coatbridge, which initially runs until January, a success.

And his winning mentality will be music to the ears of player/manager Darren Young.

“I’m just gutted not to have got my first win yet,” he insisted. “I absolutely hate losing – so after we get our first win it should be fine.”
