You Bute-y: Big fun to be had in the great outdoors

-

Throughout the summer months I’ve been trying to get back to nature and embrace the great outdoors.

Therefore I was quick to accept an invitation for a trip doon the water to the Bute Agricultural Society’s annual summer show.

It’s a day when everyone and their dog – quite literally – get together for some fun, farming and friendly competition.

Typically, it rained throughout but I didn’t allow the inclement weather to dampen my spirits.

And I have to say I enjoyed getting up close and personal with every animal that gets a namecheck in the children’s favourite ‘Old McDonald Had A Farm’.

Undoubtedly, though, my favourite part of the day was the pet competition.

I was particularly captivated with the category where top prize went to the pooch that looked most like their handler.

The woman who won was, of course, delighted. But an award that’s presented for looking like a dog? You’d have to be barking.

It’s not something I’m entering any time soon.

In a moment of macho madness I almost joined in the tug-of-war event but caved at the last moment, just in case I got rope burns on my hands.

That would have been a disaster for my rousing rendition of ‘Clappa Clappa Handies’, which always receives a warm round of applause.
