OAPs are terrorised by thief

- Ian Bunting

A pair of petrified pensioners were threatened by a thief during a shocking house robbery in Coatbridge.

An 82- year- old woman was being visited by her 72- year- old male friend at her Dunbeth Avenue home last Thursday morning when the heartless intruder entered the property.

The thug threatened the stunned OAPs and demanded money before making off with several items of jewellery and a three-figure sum of cash.

The suspect ran up Dunbeth Avenue, heading first to Dunbeth Road and then towards the Red Bridge area of Coatbridge.

His terrified victims suffered no injuries but were left “very distressed” by their frightening encounter.

Police are looking for the public’s help in tracing the suspect, who is described as white, between 5ft 2in and 5ft 8in and with a slim build.

He spoke with a local accent and was wearing a dark coloured top with light coloured sleeves.

Officers have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and reviewing CCTV footage.

Detective Sergeant David Lamont said: “A number of personal items have been stolen in this robbery; items which, to the owner, are irreplaceable. It’s imperative we locate them and identify the thief.

“The incident occurred at 10.10am and I’m appealing to anyone who may have been in the area around that time to think and consider if they noticed or saw anything which seemed a little odd.

“The suspect ran off along Dunbeth Road toward the Red Bridge area, which would have been busy at the time.

“I’d appeal to anyone who may have any information or knowledge, or know the person responsible, to contact us.”

People with information are asked to contact CID officers at Coatbridge on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where details can be given anonymously.
