Threatened to murder his partner

Drunken tirade in public

- Court Reporter

An Airdrie brute threatened to “murder” his partner during a boozed- up public tirade – in what was his tenth domestically aggravated offence.

Jealous George Todd repeatedly shouted and swore at the stunned woman – who was with friends – and accused her of being with another man on East High Street, Airdrie, on August 29.

The foul-mouthed 33-year-old was later arrested by police and owned up to his disgraceful actions at Airdrie Sheriff Court.

South Bridge Street resident Todd made his way back into the dock for sentencing last week at the conclusion of reports looking into his background.

Procurator fiscal Yolande Love told the court: “The complainer and accused had been in a relationship for 10 years at the time.

“At 1am, the complainer was walking with friends and noticed the accused and he began to shout, ‘where the f*** have you been?’

“The complainer ignored him and he accused her of being with another male and shouted, ‘I’m gonna murder you’.

“The complainer contacted the police and the accused left.

“Police attended and when they were speaking to witnesses, the accused attended and was then arrested.”

Defence solicitor Mark Lutton laid the blame for his client’s behaviour firmly at the feet of Todd’s alcohol consumption.

Mr Lutton said: “He is in full acceptance of his responsibility; this was highly inappropriate and unfair.

“Alcohol played a significant part in his conduct and affected his memory of the events.

“He consumed alcohol due to the low mood he was experiencing and took it out on the complainer.”

Presiding sheriff, Petra Collins, then passed sentence on Todd: “I will make a community payback order of supervision for a period of 15 months and 80 hours’ unpaid work, which I have reduced from 120 due to your plea, and allow you six months to complete.

“This is your tenth domestically aggravated offence so this is a direct alternative to custody and if you breach the order and are brought back before me then you can expect a custodial sentence.”
