When it comes to a bedroom redesign you don’t have to throw out everything but the en-suite sink in order to change the feel of a room.

The addition of new bedside furniture, a wallpaper refresh or an eyecatching paint-job on a feature wall can all serve to brighten a room and make it feel exciting again.

When it comes to trends, florals, four-poster beds and shabby-chic are all currently popular, but jostling for your attention are sleek, grey-blue, modernlooking rooms, with a very clean, angular,future-gazing feel.

Much of the bright block-colour style of yesteryear is now out, but pastel shades are still popular and can easily replace your block reds and greens with more muted, warmer, spring tones.

Of course, getting a new bed is perhaps the most telling change to a bedroom, and the four poster seems to be a compelling choice for many buyers this year.

Obviously this is an ostentatious look and you’ll need a similar level of seeming opulence in the rest of the room for the big bed not to seem wildly out of place.

And yes, it does take up a fair bit of room, not just on the deck but reaching for the sky too, so make sure your room dimensions can handle the four-poster.

It’s not just a case of whether or not you can physically erect the bed within your bedroom, it’s whether the completed bed will then dominate your room to the extent that it just doesn’t work. Also, if you are planning to move in the near future, or if you rent your home, consider whether or not the fourposter will fit in your next home too.

Four-posters are often also called canopy beds and are attractive because of the drapes which clothe the frame of the bed.

You can choose lavish curtained drapes or just a pretty and cooling fabric.

The latter choice is good for the summer months when curtain-style drapes may trap the heat in during the colder, winter months.

If you want something of the look and feel of the four-poster but don’t want to go overboard with size and style, you could opt for a low-post bed instead.

It’s a very traditional look but much less imposing, using the posts themselves as the eye-catching detail, rather than the billowing drapes.

If you’re aiming for a more rustic bedroom design then you might consider a wrought-iron or brass bed.

They look great and they are sturdy and stand up to a lot of shunting around if you redesign often.

If you prefer wooden bed styles the sleigh bed is a beautiful design, with curves highlighting the headboard and footboard and bringing out the likeness to a sleigh.

More traditional and modern bed styles remain popular too, and you’ll do just as well with a more practical bed choice such as one built on a solid platform to make the most of usable space.
