Russell’s hungry for derby days Striker relishing chance to savour big crowd

- Colin Paterson

Iain Russell insists he will have an extra edge against Albion Rovers – because he hasn’t featured in many big derbies.

The Airdrieonians striker admits this Saturday’s New Broomfield duel with Albion Rovers will be extra special due to the fact that bragging rights are at stake.

Russell is in the 15th year of his professional career.

But the 33-year-old revealed that he has little experience of derbyday action outside of former club Morton’s pre-season clashes with Renfrewshire rivals St Mirren.

He said: “We know the fans look forward to these matches and want to win more than most.

“I don’t have too many memories of going to the derbies with Rovers.

“But from seeing the highlights last season, there are obviously good crowds for these games.

“I played in the Renfrewshire derby between St Mirren and Morton and that was really good.

“There were full stadiums and the games were well contested. I haven’t played in many derbies, though, so that probably gives me something extra.

“But I think this one will be more fiercely contested than a lot of derbies you get in Scotland outside of the top teams.”

Airdrie are seven points behind joint- leaders Alloa Athletic and Livingston after six games.

However, Russell has urged the Diamonds faithful to be patient with the team as they get to grips with full-time football – and the pressures of playing every week.

He said: “I think everybody is disappointed with the recent results as we want to be challenging right at the top of the league.

“We’re still optimistic and have competed well – people forget that Airdrie have just gone full-time.

“It’s almost a brand-new squad. I think Kevin [McBride, head coach] is working well with what he’s got. I think we’re doing really well.

“It is challenging to be playing every week and being expected to get positive results.

“We’re trying to pass the ball and have our own philosophy. We want to win games but we have to remember the long-term vision.

“Kevin is encouraging, very positive and wants us to play the right way. We’re learning every week. We’re not too far away from the likes of Livingston.”

Russell has scored five goals so far this season and loving his time with the Diamonds.

He added: “I couldn’t be happier playing for Airdrie and for someone like Kevin who is great with me on and off the park.

“My family are at every home game, which is great for me.”
