Defence solicitor Nicky Matteo claimed alcohol had played a huge part in his client’s unruly actions. He said:“He doesn’t have a lot of conviction­s.

“This is a man who requires some form of assistance as there is a direct relationsh­ip between alcohol and his offending.

“He can’t remember much about the incident. He still has employment and does offer remorse.

“He is ashamed of his actions and I would ask Your Lordship to give him the opportunit­y of a community payback order.”

Sheriff Derrick McIntyre hit out at Brown’s conduct when handing down his sentence:“I am surprised that someone of your age is in court on these offences; you should set a better example to your family.

“I will place you on a community payback order with 18 months’supervisio­n, with a conduct requiremen­t that you attend alcohol counsellin­g.

“You will also do 200 hours’unpaid work, which I have reduced from 250 due to your plea, within six months and pay the police officer £150 for striking him.” The sheriff also fixed a review of Brown’s order for January 25 next year.
