‘Victory’ must be put in perspective

-

Dear Editor Like Ruth Davidson’s “success” at May’s election (20.8 per cent), Labour’s “victory” in Coatbridge North needs to be put in perspective.

Namely, a 10 per cent swing to the SNP on a very low turnout while the oncemighty Labour is currently at 16 per cent in the polls. Sixteen per cent!

Post-Brexit, we have the first stirrings of fascism in Britain. A Tory government which wanted to name and shame “foreign” workers while demonising “foreign” doctors. And Theresa May calls the SNP “divisive nationalists!”

How long before all “foreigners” have to wear identifying marks in public and the deportations start? Maybe us Scots could wear wee saltire armbands.

Ridiculous? Paranoid? It can’t happen here? It’s happening already. This is how it starts.

The persecution of “foreigners”. Is this the sort of government Scotland wants? And what are we going to do about it?

Labour is in complete disarray north and south of the border – as usual, Labour is much happier opposing itself than the Tories.

Consistent and very clear as always, Kezia Dugdale tells us that Jeremy Corbyn is unelectable, then he isn’t. That Scotland can remain in the UK and the EU. That Labour opposes nuclear weapons but supports Trident. That Labour opposes austerity while abstaining in votes against it and leaving Scotland at the mercy of the Tories, possibly for decades to come.

Poor Kez. She’s so confused. She used to be indecisive, now she’s not so sure. She can’t seem to press anyone’s button these days. Not even her own.

It strikes me as odd that Scottish Labour keeps banging on about its “autonomy”. So independence is good enough for Labour but not for Scotland?

Surely if Scotland is “Better Together” with the UK, Scottish Labour should be “Better Together” with Labour at Westminster?

Meanwhile, the suicidal madness which is Brexit threatens to ruin Scotland, costing up to 80,000 jobs and £8 billion over the next decade.

If only there was some way Scotland could ensure it was never ruled by English Tory governments we do not vote for ever again...

An independent Scotland or Little England under perpetual Tory rule – unelected, xenophobic, hard right. The choice is ours.

As Kezia Dugdale’s own father recently tweeted: “Do you wish your country to be governed by the Tories forever?”

It’s a good question. Christopher Smith Airdrie
