Two cool, calm and calculated Coatbridge High pupils achieved sumthing special during their school exams.

Aidan Kelly and Rhianna Alison wowed their teachers and families with their performances in maths.

Third year student Aidan defied his age by obtaining a B pass in Higher maths, sitting an exam meant for pupils two or three years ahead of him at school.

A spokesperson for Coatbridge High said: “This is another remarkable achievement to add to the list for Aidan.

“He achieved an A band 1 in National 5 at the end of first year and proceeded to study the maths Higher course throughout second and third year, sitting the maths Higher exam at the end of S3 alongside his S5 and S6 peers.

“Aidan worked extremely hard and dedicated a lot of time to achieving his Higher grade and we are thrilled by his progress.”

Aidan’s gift with numbers was spotted by his former teachers at Townhead Primary School before being honed by Coatbridge High’s principal maths teacher Ian Bryson.

Mr Bryson taught Aidan on a one-to-one basis throughout second and third year and the proud mentor said: “It’s no surprise that Aidan has obtained his Higher maths in S3.

“He is a brilliant pupil with an incredible gift for mathematics and should be very proud of his achievements.”

“I really enjoy maths and worked hard to pass.”

Multi- skilled Rhianna has been hailed as a future star by her teachers. She won six awards from her time in fourth year at Coatbridge High.

Rhianna’s maths teacher Hazel McLaughlin, said: “Full marks in any exam, never mind National 5 maths which is an extremely difficult course, is hard to achieve and it is testament to Rhianna’s work ethic and determination to succeed.

“The maths department are all absolutely delighted for Rhianna and really proud of her. This is a brilliant achievement.

“Rhianna is a joy to have in the class and it’s been a pleasure to teach her. I look forward to seeing many more successes for her in the future.”

Coatbridge High headteacher Janie O’Neill said: “They are both remarkable pupils who have done brilliantly during their exams.
