Gartcairn prove to be up for cup

North Region side swept away in second round

-

Gerry Bonham says Gartcairn produced the best performance of his time in charge as they cruised to victory in the second round of the Junior Cup.

The Central District Second Division side beat Aberdeenshire’s Newmachar United 5-0 on Saturday at MTC Park.

In-form Jordan Love bagged a brace with John Henderson, Yamikani Misanjo and Chris Patrick also on the scoresheet.

And boss Bonham was full of praise for his side as they marched into the third-round draw.

He said: “It was a hard test for us as they were a fit, young team. We treated them with total respect as we didn’t know anything about them.

“We were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to two good goals and were a bit more free-flowing in the second half.

“But, in general, that was the best football I’ve seen from my team – especially in the first half. “It was a joy to watch.” Bonham admits Gartcairn had to be wary of letting Newmachar into the game through the back door.

However, he was quick to recognise a superb effort which led to his first Junior Cup win as a manager.

“We told them to be patient in the second half,” Bonham added.

“That’s 11 goals in three games and three clean sheets on the bounce for us. We’re delighted with that.

“It’s a massive achievement for us to be in the third round of the Junior Cup.

“We could end up getting a Super League team and play at an amazing venue.”

Gartcairn will now turn their attention to league business and prepare for the visit of Carluke Rovers this Saturday.

“We want to keep the winning run going,” continued Bonham. “But we’re not getting ahead of ourselves. We played Carluke in the League Cup and they are a cracking side.

“We want to stay near top of the table. The dressing room is on a high and the boys are loving things just now.

“We know what it takes at the end of the season. But we need to pick up points at the start of it.”
