Fears for tears in this footie fiasco

-

Dear Editor Being an Airdrieonians fan for over 40 years, you’d think I’d have seen it all at the club.

From the club dying and being reborn to promotions, relegations, cup finals and even games in Europe, the Diamonds have been quite the team to follow.

But I cannot get my head around the club’s decision this week to get rid of head coach Kevin McBride and replace him with first-time manager Mark Wilson.

The team has won its last two league games and is sitting in fourth spot in the League One table, which would be good enough for a play-off place.

Why make the change now, especially to bring in a guy with no managerial experience whatsoever?

I know some people will say Wilson will have the support of Gordon Dalziel as director of football, but Dalziel hasn’t managed in the game for many years – and won’t even be able to attend match days on a Saturday due to his broadcasting commitments.

The whole thing is incredibly strange and I hope it doesn’t derail the team’s chances of finishing in the play-offs; an achievement I think most fans would have accepted at the start of the season.

As a supporter I obviously wish Wilson and Dalziel well in the months – and hopefully years – ahead.

But I fear the whole thing will end in tears with the pair of them slinking back onto the radio with their tails between their legs.
