Dynamic duo dumb down

Central Intelligence (15)

Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart play against type in this so-so actioncomedy.

The latter plays the straight man to Johnson’s hulking man-child in a likeable double act.

But the plot is as minuscule as it is predictable and most of the best laughs are shoehorned into the opening half hour.

The Neon Demon (18)

Nicolas Winding Refn’s latest weird creation is an upgrade on the awful, pretentious Only God Forgives.

But we’re still a long way off the quality of Drive with his strange take on the vampire mythology.

Elle Fanning is impressive in the lead role and some of the imagery will stay with you for days.

The Fall Series 3 (18)

While there may yet be further adventures for Gillian Anderson’s Stella Gibson, the third series of the crime show marks the departure of Jamie Dornan’s serial killer Paul Spector.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the character’s story arc, albeit in a show that peaked with its first run of episodes.

Dornan is everything he wasn’t in the Fifty Shades movie; an intense mix of broodiness, charisma, danger and pure evil.

Anderson dovetails well with her colead as she’s put through the wringer of trying to prove Spector’s guilt.

A slow start that plays like an extended episode of Casualty gives way to effective twists and turns.
