Will it be the way of dignity?

-

Dear Editor,

Despite the fact that [former Scottish secretary] Ian Lang openly admitted that the the GERS figures were designed specifically to show Scotland in a poor economic light, a contributor last week [Advertiser View, October 26] spent much of his letter quoting from these figures.

No doubt they also believe that the BBC in Scotland accurately report the state of the Scottish health service. So it does appear that you can fool some of the people all of the time.

Personally, I can take no pride in the argument that we are an ulcer in the belly of the UK and we should bow our knee in eternal gratitude that they allow us to take so much from them while we give so little back.

Why, if Scotland is in such a poor financial state, does the UK government spend so much time trying to hang on to this country, especially in these times of UK austerity?

And who has governed Scotland so badly over these 300 years that these conditions now prevail here?

The second question is easily answered; the first is a bit of a puzzle, though. For these reasons I could not support continued Westminster rule especially with the EU exit imminent. There is no honour, no self respect and no future for Scots in it.

It’s becoming clearer that we can either suffer helplessly as collateral damage from the mess created by the Union over the past 300 years, and submit meekly to being taken out of the EU against the wishes of the majority in Scotland, or we can trust ourselves to run Scotland in our own way and tidy up the mess they have made.

Deference or dignity you might say; the choice is ours. Gerry Parker,

Whifflet
