Warriors’ success

Grand boost to charity

- Judith Tonner

Members of Bannan Fitness Club tackled a testing obstacle course – and raised £ 1000 for diabetes care.

The 17- strong group produced a knockout display in completing the Total Warrior challenge in North Berwick, where the challenges included a firewalk, ice bath and negotiating plenty of mud over the 12km distance.

Participants decided to donate their funds raised to NHS Lanarkshire’s diabetes facilities, as Laura Dolan – granddaughter of Pat Bannan, who helped found the Coatbridge club in 2009 – has had type 1 diabetes since childhood.

Laura, 21, said: “Since my granddad and his friends do so much charity work, I thought it would be a great cause for them.

“I’ve had great support from the David Matthews diabetes cent re at Monklands Hospital. The staff have been fantastic and when I visit, about four times a year, that’s given me a great insight into their work to help people who have diabetes.”

Pat added: “Our goal is to do several fundraisers each year. We’ve collected thousands for various good causes, and we realised this was the perfect cause for one of our challenges.”

Members presented their cheque to diabetes consultant Dr Izzy Howat, who said: “This was a marvellous effort and everyone pushed themselves to the limit.

“It’s great to receive such a generous donation and the staff will make sure it is put to very good use.”
