Marvellous milestone
Star Trek Beyond (12) ●●●● ●
The sci-fi saga celebrates its 50th anniversary in style with a rollicking adventure reminiscent of the original TV show.
The cast have fully grown into their roles and director Justin Lin brings a fresh eye to the impressive set pieces.
Touching tributes are also paid to the late Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin.
Christmas with the Coopers (12) ●● ●●●
Festive laughs are hard to come by in this treacly Christmas comedy.
Diane Keaton and John Goodman are among an impressive ensemble let down by a stodgy script and unnecessary narration.
If you’re looking for genuine winter warmth with a comedic touch then stick with Home Alone or Elf instead.
Better Call Saul Season 2 (15) ●●●● ●
The Breaking Bad spin-off establishes itself on sounder footing for its second season.
Bob Odenkirk is outstanding in the lead role and is gifted some wonderful material from the show’s team of writers.
Jonathan Banks’ journey to the inevitable as Mike Ehrmantraut is expertly played out and the 69-yearold provides sterling support.
Like its predecessor, it’s slow-burn – but the wait for increased drama and tension is well worth it.
There are hints and nods to Breaking Bad, but Better Call Saul also stands on its own two feet as polished television.
The terrific final episode is nailbiting stuff and acts as a tantalising start-off point for the show’s third run.
