Gartcairn upset Whitburn in the Cup

- Mark Pirie

Gartcairn boss Gerry Bonham was bursting with pride as his side pulled off an upset in the Scottish Junior Cup.

The MTC Park outfit claimed a three-goal win over Whitburn to secure their place in the fourth round and the manager was ecstatic with the performance of his players.

He said: “It is a scalp for us – we went in as underdogs, there’s no doubt about it.

“We didn’t know too much about the way Whitburn play before the game, but we have set our standard every week.

“It doesn’t matter who you are we will do our best as a team and compete.

“Whitburn are a big team at our level with a great history, and we have only been going for a couple of years.

“It just shows what a great team spirit can do.

“I’m so proud of all the boys for what they achieved.”

He added: “Three goals, a clean sheet and through to the next round of the cup – I couldn’t have asked for any more than that from the boys.

“Now we can look forward to the draw.”

Gartcairn go back to league duty this Saturday when they

prepare to face Port Glasgow – who sit just one place below them in the table.

Bonham is keen to take it just one game at a time and get points on the board – but hopes thinks the Cup win has given them a boost.

“I was really proud of the players on Saturday, and they deserved to celebrate going through, but we don’t want to get to ahead of ourselves,”he told the Advertiser.

“Even in training the Cup win has created a really good atmosphere between the players, but we just need to focus on going to Port Glasgow and getting another win.”
