Teenage girls terrified by yob

-

A drunken Airdrie lout has been jailed for subjecting two teenage girls to a “terrifying experience” outside a takeaway in Chapelhall.

Alistair Watt, 31, of Cawdor Crescent, pleaded guilty at Airdrie Sheriff Court to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause fear and alarm.

He admitted shouting and swearing and acting aggressively towards the young girls aged 13 and 15, by repeatedly banging on the windows of the car they were in, and attempting to gain entry to the vehicle and challenging others to a fight.

The incident happened outside the Jasmine House Takewaway on Lauchope Street on October 29.

Prosecutor Yolande Love told the court: “It happened at 10pm when the mother parked her car outside the takeaway and left the children in the car.

“A male was staggering about drunk and approached the car and began banging on the bonnet and windows and attempted to open the rear passenger door. The girls began crying.

“The mother challenged Watt and he became aggressive and challenged her to a fight.”

Speaking in mitigation defence lawyer Paul Hughes said: “He was highly intoxicated. His behaviour, on this occasion, was reprehensible. He can’t explain how he began to binge drink over a threemonth period.”

Jailing Watt, Sheriff Frank Pieri told him: “The only way I can deal with this case is by imposing a custodial sentence.

“This must have been a terrifying experience for those in the car. I would normally have imposed a six months sentence, but I will discount it and impose a four months sentence because of your early plea.”
