Use them or lose them: Support your local shops

-

Many large chain department stores and banks have pulled out of our high streets.

That’s the harsh reality facing our local High Streets who are fighting for survival in these harsh economic times.

It’s simple - if you don’s use them you will lose them.

So this festive season wander down to your High Street and see the wealth of independent retailers who are right here on your doorstep.

Your spending in the high street really does boost the local economy

Research on spending by local authorities shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63 pence stayed in the local economy, compared to 40 pence with a larger business.

It is the ethical choice to make this Christmas.

Buying out-of-season produce, like strawberries in December, lowers your eco-credentials.

As does eating turkey and carrots that have been flown halfway round the world or are wrapped in layers of plastic.

When you shop at local butchers, bakers, farm shops and green grocers, it is likely that a decent percentage of the produce has had a short field-to-fork journey.

Along with supporting local farmers, it means the food is likely to contain more nutrients and have less packaging.

On top of that, you may get a better deal and good advice when you shop at your local retailer.

Local bakers throw in extra mince pies for regulars; grocers give informal 10 per cent discounts; and market stall holders are prepared to negotiate on prices. Independent retailers can use their discretion to reward regular custom, and it can mean you get discounts on the items you actually want to buy, rather than being tempted by multi-buy offers in the big chains.

If you get to know your independent trader they will get to know you and know what you like.

It’s a relationship that last for years and you are sure of benefits, especially at this time of year. It could also lead to loyalty cards. Some areas have launched their own High Street keep it local loyalty cards.

Similar to your supermarket points cards, this is a way to keep people shopping their own high streets.
