Provost’s festive message
The festive season is a time for spending with loved ones and reflecting on the year just gone, but this time round I’ve been considering more than just the events of the last 12 months.
As many of you know, I’ll be stepping down from public life at the local election in May, so this will be my last Christmas message as Provost.
There are mixed emotions as I consider the 25 years I’ve spent in public service; there’s pride in what we’ve achieved, frustration that we could have done more, but overall, pride.
I joined local government in 1992 to make a difference, to challenge the unfairness many people experience in life, and to represent those in need.
And throughout my time as a councillor I’ve met so many inspirational people, both here in North Lanarkshire and also through visiting Africa, where our “Aiming Higher in Malawi Project” has done so much to help some of the poorest people on the planet.
Globally, the world feels less secure, and nothing illustrates this better than the hundreds of thousands of Syrian people being forced to flee their homes.
This council has played a full and active role in the resettlement programme, and the people of North Lanarkshire have warmly welcomed our new residents, who arrived from war-torn Syria just over a year ago.
It’s been heartening to hear their stories and learn how they are beginning to rebuild their lives here in Scotland, thanks to the support of so many people in our communities.
I am proud of this council’s support for St Andrew’s Hospice, for the Lanarkshire Beatson, at Monklands Hospital in Airdrie and of our commitment to supporting people and communities who need it most.
This year the council is supporting the Salvation Army’s gift appeal, where members of the public and staff can donate gifts to children in our area, who, for whatever reason, might not receive one. You can take part by handing in your gifts at most of our main offices.
As we say goodbye to the old year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you as Provost – it has been a true honour – and to wish everyone in North Lanarkshire a happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
