B team hold top spot after Workmen derby

Exciting showdown at league clash

- Mark Pirie

The Workmen’s B team held top spot in the Airdrie and District Darts League with another convincing derby win.

Workmen’s C were confident coming into the tie against their top of the table rivals.

Ger ry Brown though soon dampened their spirits with two 180’s and a 14-darter, showing that the B team were not top of the league for nothing.

As the game progressed they were level, before three time District Champion Cammy Reynolds took to the oche.

He was not favourite on current form to beat Tommy Rodman, despite Rodman playing well Reynolds really turned back the clock with 20-dart and 21-dart wins to pip Rodman and set up a grandstand finish in the singles games for The Workmens B. They took the next three games which included a 15-darter for Stevie Carson and a maximum for Davie Cunningham.

Scott Gibb was on the mark with a 20-dart win.

With The Workmen’s C needing to take all the wins in the pairs games to win their task was nigh impossible and the match, the points and the derby bragging rights were soon secured by The Workmen’s B.

Wilson Arms tried as hard as they could to stop Carsons unbeaten run but their attempts were futile against much better class players.

They did play to their potential and took a couple of chalks, but they lacked strength in depth to put it up to the current champions.

The Eagle moved up to third in the table with a comprehensive win at The Boar’s Head.

Jim Walker had given the home side some cheer with an 18-darter and a 126 checkout but they failed to put up much more of a challenge.

Bill Brown was best for the Eagle with a 17-dart win in a match that was over at the interval.

The Swan continue on the winning trail after their poor start to the season. Jim Parker with 18-dart and 20-dart wins and Gordon Jackson on the mark with a 19-dart win proved too much for their hosts The Workmen’s A.

The Workmen’s A are now firmly embroiled in a four-way unwanted battle for the wooden spoon.

The Albert Bar gave their guest’s all they could muster in their home match with The Bank Club. But it was the visitors who went back to Coatbridge with the points.

The Forge continue to get decent results and a point will suit many teams as The Clansman is a hard place to win.

Gavin Crawley’s 17-darter set the visitors up well, but The Clansman dug in well to take a share of the points with Alex McPheat being the main man, notching a 16-dart victory. RESULTS for Monday, December 19: The Boar’s Head 1 The Eagle 11, Workmen’s B 7 Workmen’s C 5, The Clansman 6 The Forge 6, The Albert Bar 5 Bank Social Club 7, Workmen’s A 4 The Swan 8, Wilson’s Arms 2 Carsons 10. FIXTURES resume on Monday January 9 following a festive break.
